WASHINGTON -- Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have fled their homeland are likely to seek refugee status in the United States, humanitarian groups said, putting intense pressure on the Bush administration to reexamine a policy that authorizes only 500 Iraqis to be resettled here next year.

"Gene" Dewey, who was President Bush's assistant secretary of state for refugee affairs until last year, said that "for political reasons the administration will discourage" the resettlement of Iraqi refugees in the United States "because of the psychological message it would send, that it is a losing cause."

The article mentions that eventually the administration will have to change it's viewpoint, but from their perspective now, the war we started can't be dangerous enough to allow refugees to live here because that would tell the world that we're losing. So even though people are still dying and Iraqis are willing to leave their homes to escape the situation, we're not at this point going to help them because it might make us look like we fucked up. Um... I think it already looks like we fucked up.
