New Nukes, great

So first I was outraged this week about that Iraqi in Fallujah that was shot even though he was unarmed and wounded. I mean, this is a policy problem, not a soldier problem. Certainly we're in a sad state of affairs where even the insurgents aren't following the rules of war, and a soldier walking to a wounded man could very well be signing his own death warrant. But there's procedure to combat that. If a wounded man could questionably have a weapon, the soldier should treat the situation like any law inforcement would. Call backup, wait until it arrives and proceed as a group with caution. You may still be attacked, but there's a huge difference between a bullet wound and a kill shot.
So then I was stunned to hear about 31 Iraqi soldiers that apparently just gave up and were kidnapped(sorry no link).
But what caught me this morning as just utterly shocking was news that Russia is developing a new nuclear weapon.

"News reports have also said Russia is believed to be developing a next-generation heavy nuclear missile that could carry up to 10 nuclear warheads weighing a total of 4.4 tons, compared with the Topol-M's 1.32-ton combat payload.
Topol-Ms have been deployed in silos since 1998. The missiles have a range of about 6,000 miles and reportedly can maneuver in ways that are difficult to detect.
Earlier this year, a senior Defense Ministry official was quoted as telling news agencies that Russia had developed a weapon that could make the United States' proposed missile-defense system useless. Details were not given, but military analysts said the claimed new weapon could be a hypersonic cruise missile or maneuverable ballistic missile warheads. "

Didn't you miss the cold war? Aren't you glad it'll be back in a year?
What gets me with this also is that it comes back to Bush. It was Bush that denied Putin's overreaching of power in Russia. It was Bush that failed to sign the ballistic test ban treaty. It was Bush that brought back the old Reagan era idea of a missle defense system. It's like if there was one thing we could do wrong, any one of these was in that category. It just goes to prove that when you live by the gun you die by it. As we continue to be a war driven pre-emptive strike type nation, we'll eventually be looked as a possible threat, even to our allies. Now I don't believe Putin is trying to shake up anything in the US, but it is pretty pointed that there was direct mention of how these new missles will make current American defenses useless. Why would that even be studied if someone on Putin's team wasn't thinking of the US as a future threat to Russia or the world for that matter. We've gone from being the best on the block with the cool toys to being the spoiled kid that everyone hates. This is the America we've elected. We're currently locked in for four more years. Toronto just sounds more appealing everyday, doesn't it?
