Bait and Switch

Okay, so the media sucks ass in that it doesn't ever focus on issues that are most important, but wastes time on smut and stupidity to eat up it's hours and pages of content. But this recent business with Mark Foley has even gotten the bloggers into the game of bait and switch. Has anybody realized that in the moment when we all should be banding together to protest the passing a bill containing the most heinous rights violations since Japanese internment and all anyone wants to talk about is a pervert on capitol hill. I don't care that this resignation is good for the democratic party. I don't care that there are going to be ethics committees to investigate and make accountable guys like Hastert. Now we get the media trifecta. First the secret is out and the man resigns. Then he comes out saying alcohol was to blame. And for the biggins.... Foley announces he was raped by a priest at a young age. Look, the guy deserves to have to go through the ropes, but is this really headline news compared to everything else that's going on? Is this scandal really going to impact the election. Well sadly, yes. There are enough republicans annoyed with this that it may actually sway a vote or two, but the general populace, could give a fuck.
NPR this morning just had a story about the Congressional race the reporter asked the opinions from the crowd about a recent campaign speech. Their reply when asked about Foley, who cares, we're worried about jobs and the economy.
We better start realizing who're supposed to be the important people.

UPDATE: Another NPR story on this crap has pissed me off. This morning I'm driving in and they've got some lady talking about how severe the effects of alcoholism are and how this could indeed be a valid excuse for Foley. Look, I don't care how well AA works or how terrible alcoholism can be to a person's psychi, the fact remains that this is just a fuckin' ruse. It's just another ploy to keep attention off of what's important.
