just saw a client who was incarcerated for 4 years for "fraud." she
was receiving welfare "benefits" for her and her two daughters after
she got the courage to dump her abusive husband, but it obviosuly
wasn't nearly enough. raising two teenage girls on 50% of what the
poverty line is kinda sorta fucking impossible. on top of this, one
of her daughters needed braces, and she knew she wouldn't receive the
same health benefits if she went off welfare because her daughter
would be slapped with a "preexisting condition." so, instead of just
giving up, she decided to work some temp work on the side--on weekends
at the fairgrounds. welfare found out about it and arrested her for
fraud. they were going to lock her up for 1 year, and she "became
belligerent" in front of the judge (probably because she was scared
for her daughters), so the judge gave her 4. her daughters were given
over to the state, moved around several foster homes, and when mom got
out of prison, one daughter was pregnant and both had dropped out
after one year of high school. mom now has panic attacks everyday, a
pregnant 15 year old, and two drop outs.

Yeah, I'm fucking mad.
