Tao of Today

Tao Te Ching
Trans. Hua-Ching Ni
8
One of the universal nature is like water;
he benefits all things
but does not contend with them.
He unprotestingly take the lowest position;
thus, he is close to the universal truth.

One of universal nature chooses
to live in a suitable environment.
He attunes his mind to become profound.
He deals with others with kindness.
In his speech, he is sincere.
His rule brings about order.
His work is efficient.
His actions are opportune.

One of deep virtue does not contend with people;
thus, his is above reproach.

Trans. S. Mitchell

The supreme good is like water,
which nourishes all things without trying to.
It is content with the low places that people disdain.
Thus it is like the Tao.

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don't try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.

When you are content to be simply yourself
and don't compare or compete,
everybody will respect you.

WATER

Consider water...it is the best of examples.

Water is there for the taking, yet asks nothing in return.
It seeks its level, often in low places
And therefore it is very like The Dao.

Place your dwelling in the proper spot, with honor to the Spirit of Place.
Keep your mind open if you would learn.
In dealings with others, try to see the other side.
Speak only the truth within you.
If you would lead, lead from your Center.
Know what you do, and do what you know,
And do not tarry in your efforts.

Do not thrash against the current, but flow with it'
For it will take you to where you need to go.
