Tao of Today

From the Hua Hu Ching(or the oral traditions of Lao Tzu)

"Venerable teacher, is it possible for an individual to uplift himself to the immortal realm and enjoy pure freedom and perfect happiness?"
"Kind Prince," replied the master, " it is possible. Undiscriminating virtue is the vehicle that transports one there; it expresses the highest energy of universal nature. It brings forth all lives and offers support to the development of all human beings. It is the conjoint energy of high spiritual beings who respond to all energy of the same subtle frequency as their own. The most powerful protection one can have from negative influences is the whole virtue of natural life. This is the simple reality of the law of energy respone. Kind and selfless beings lead a life attuned to the Universal Way(Tao) . With whole virtue they eliminate the artificial boundries between societies and the illusory boundry between life and death. In this way they become immortal."
"Venerable Teacher, do all immortal divine beings have insight?"
"Kind Prince, it is not a question of whether they have insight into one particular thing or not, but whether a being has cultivated and developed the vision of wholeness before realizing an integral life of immortality. If a person learns only the technique of gathering energy in order to become immortal, but does not develop his entire being and complete vision, then his cultivation depends entirely on the information he is able to gather. Even if he is fortunate enough to learn the right way from a secret book or special instruction, he will probe in darkness and may succeed in becoming immortal only by grace. Most likely, he will meet with many kinds of trouble before he ever gets that far, unless his virtue is complete."
"Venerable Teacher, if one develops insight through practicing a secret system of self-cultivation, can he become an immortal without any difficulties?"
"Kind prince, it is not that those with knowledge of a secret system of self-cultivation do not encounter the problems of life, but rather that they are thoroughly equipped to deal with them successfully. One should not think of difficult situations as being trouble, but rather as the unfolding of a virtuous life and its subtle laws."
"Venerable Teacher, I understand that one who is cultivating himself in order to evolve to the immortal realm must not try to hide in a corner and avoid the reality of life. He must face the reality of worldly life, for the reality of one's cultivation and development lies in learning to solve all possible difficulties through the unfoldment of one's complete vision which sees the integral truth."
"Kind prince, there can be no complete development for those who do not live a complete life. A complete life is the foundation for the attainment of immortality. If an individual's energy is distorted and imbalaced because of partial development, this contradicts the law of existence and disintegrates the person's being. The result is not only the loss of possible immortality, but the very dissolution of life itself."
