I'm not going to put any links on this post, because you don't have to look to hard to see what I'm talking about. I've mentioned before about how damning it is for our country to make statements that are outright rascist in the way of arabs or muslims. I've also made a point to mention folks like Pat Buchanan who've started to raise an issue that "white america" is in trouble. Well apparently Ann Coulter has joined the fight. As well as Limbaugh(as if he ever left) and several of our currently elected congressmen(watch the Daily Show from last night for a funny take on this). What we have right now is what I'd refer to as a regression of civil rights. This isn't a white or black thing anymore, it concerns everyone. Over the past few years every citizen with views outside of the administration's has been attacked as treasonous. Our privacy standards are at an alltime low with illegal wiretapping, disclosures of phone records, library rentals, email. Where does it stop?
By now you might be thinking that I'm confusing things. What would surveillance have to do with rascism? Well plenty. The root cause of this is a defense from the truth. Right now so much is going wrong on the political landscape that everyone's suspect. Right now, blatant rascism is allowed in public discourse because anyone who tries to stop it becomes an enemy of the state.
We need to start protecting our rights, and that means everyone. We need to rekindle the civil rights movement and ensure that race, ethnicity, religion or belief do not become reasons to divide people and paint them as evil or wrong or un-american. We need to continue to push forward and not step back. Often we hear about "returning to a better time" well there was no better time. There has yet to be a historical time in this country in which all men were treated equally and endowed with the basic rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So until that can be stated and respected as the actual truth instead of the proposed truth, we haven't finished, we've only just begun.
